INVESTIGATIONS WORKSHOP

After devastating setbacks across the entire disinformation research field, Joan Donovan, PhD is returning with a mission to address political violence motivated by disinformation campaigns. In her co-authored book, Meme Wars: The Untold Story of the Online Battles Upending Democracy in America,  they explain how political campaigns use information operations and technology platforms to build and preserve power.

After leaving Harvard Kennedy School and blowing the whistle on the suppression of academic freedom, Dr. Donovan took a post at Boston University as an Assistant Professor of Journalism. She founded The Critical Internet Studies Institute (CISI) in 2024 to continue her research on media manipulation and disinformation online and bolster cyber civil defense. CISI analyzes how internet infrastructure is exploited by those looking to disrupt social institutions and derail democracy. CISI advocates for a "Public Interest Internet," a new way of thinking about content curation that supports the distribution of TALK (Timely Accurate Local Knowledge).

Given that innovations in social media have been unable to address the harms caused by the strategic use of disinformation, new theories and methods are needed to study how culture and politics are shaped by the use and abuse of emerging technology.

CISI is developing a curriculum on how to analyze technology as a political tool and we invite you to join us for our first INVESTIGATIONS WORKSHOP,  details below:
